This Mauritius Visa category was created as a way to encourage tourists, professionals, retirees, entrepreneurs and families to enter Mauritius for an extended period, with the option of working remotely. The basic Tourist Visa does not allow the holder to perform work-related activities.

Foreign nationals looking to enter Mauritius for the reasons listed below may be eligible to apply for this visa:

  • Repeat tourists planning to retire in Mauritius
  • Investors, remote workers or entrepreneurs interested in carrying out business or working remotely in Mauritius
  • Family and friends of residents on OPs who would like to visit for an extended period
  • Parents, family and friends of international students on Mauritius Study Permits who would like to visit for an extended period

Duration: The Mauritius Premium Visa is valid for a year and is extendable at the discretion of Mauritius Immigration authorities if the extension is justifiable.

Mauritius Occupation and Work Permit

Foreign nationals who want to work in Mauritius need a work permit or occupation permit.

Work permits are for shorter periods of time and require a separate residence permit.

Mauritius Retirement Permit

Mauritius Retirement Permit

Retirees may obtain a Mauritius Retirement Residence Permit. You must be 50 years of age or older to apply and invest at least 1 500,00 USD monthly or 18 000,00 USD annually from outside Mauritius into your local bank account.

This is an annual requirement and proof of transfer of funds must be provided to the Economic Development Board.

Duration: The Mauritius Retirement Residence Permit is valid for 10 years.

Mauritius Investment Permit

Mauritius Investment Permit

The Mauritius Investment Permit applies to foreign nationals wishing to enter Mauritius for the purposes of investing in a new or existing Mauritian company or start-up. To be eligible for this permit, the investor must make a minimum investment of 50 000 USD into the chosen Mauritian company.

Mauritius also offers innovative start-ups an investor permit without any minimum cash investment, if they are either deemed to be innovative by the Economic Development Board or are registered with an incubator accredited with the Research and Innovation Council.

Duration: The Mauritius Investor Occupation Permit is valid for up to 10 years and is extendable at the discretion of Mauritius Immigration. This permit allows for a route to Permanent Residence.

Types of Mauritius Visas

There are nine types of Mauritius visas.

Mauritius Tourism/Business Visa
Mauritius doesn’t distinguish between Tourist and Business Visas. However, business visa applications have a few more steps than tourist visas.
Note: The maximum stay in Mauritius must not exceed 90 days, and you must not receive remuneration from within Mauritius.

Mauritius Premium Visa
The Mauritius Premium Visa was created for people who want to enter Mauritius for a long time with the option to work remotely.
The premium visa is often preferred over the tourist visa because it allows for work-related activities.

Mauritius Short-term Occupation Permit
The Short-term Occupation Permit applies to people who want to enter Mauritius for short-term employment.

Both types of occupation permits, the short-term and long-term, require a contract of employment with the local employer and a detailed job description. You can apply to switch your short-term permit to a long-term occupation permit if you stay with the same employer.

Mauritius Professional Occupation Permit and Young Professional Occupation Permit
The Mauritius Professional Occupation Permit (POP) and Mauritius Young Professional Occupation Permit (YPOP) apply to people who have an employment contract with a Mauritian company.

You must have qualified with an an undergraduate degree from a university or college in Mauritius and be employed by a Mauritian company to be eligible for a Young Professional Occupation Permit.

Mauritius Investor Occupation Permit
The investor OP applies to people who want to enter Mauritius to invest in a new or existing Mauritian company. Investors must invest at least US$50 000 in their chosen Mauritian company.

The Mauritius Investor Occupation Permit is valid for up to 10 years. You can apply for an extension, which is ultimatley at the discretion of Mauritius Immigration.

Mauritius Self-Employed Occupation Permit
The Self-Employed Occupation Permit only applies to professionals in the services sector. They must be registered with the Registrar of Businesses.
The Mauritius Self-employed Occupation Permit provides a path to Permanent Residence.

Mauritius Dependents Residence Permit
You can apply for a Mauritius Dependants Residence Permit if you depend on the principal visa holder for financial support.
Dependants are spouses, parents, and children, including stepchildren and lawfully adopted children under 24.

Mauritius Retirement Residence Permit
You can apply for a Mauritius Retirement Residence Permit provided you are at least 50 years of age and can invest at least US$1 500 monthly or US$18 000 annually into your local bank account.

The funds must come from outside Mauritius and not through remuneration in the country.

Frequently Asked Questions

Visa-exempt visitors to Mauritius get their tourist visas upon arrival. They are valid for up to 60 days.
Visa-restricted passport holders must go to a Mauritian Embassy in their home country or country of residence to apply for the permit.

Note: Passports must be valid for a further six months from the date of arrival. Tourists must have a valid return ticket and proof they have enough money to meet all the expenses of their stay in Mauritius.

In Mauritius, you only get your business visa when you arrive at the local airport.

You must have a letter from the local sponsor/company explaining the purpose of your trip to Mauritius. The letter must contain a request for a business visa and be given to the Immigration Officer at the airport.

Note: You can’t convert a tourist visa into a business visa in Mauritius.

The Occupation Permit (OP) combines work and residence permits, so they can live and work in Mauritius. There are three categories:

Investor
Professional
Self-Employed
The Occupation Permit is valid for up to 10 years, but you can submit a new application to stay in Mauritius longer when the permit expires.

You must be a foreign national and at least 50 years old to retire in Mauritius. You must transfer at least US$1,500 or its equivalent in foreign currency to your local bank account in Mauritius.

You are required to submit this amount to your account monthly. Alternatively, you can submit instalments of at least US$18,000 annually for three years.

Note: At the end of each year, you must submit evidence of the transfer of funds into your Mauritius bank account to the Board of Investment..

Yes. You can purchase property for at least US$375,000 (approx. MUR 16,000,000).
You’re eligible for a Residence Permit in Mauritius provided the property is in your name.

Your dependents will also be entitled to the Residence Permit.

Dependents in Mauritius are defined as spouses (including Common Law Partners in a heterosesxual relationship) and children under 24.
Children include stepchildren and adopted children.

Your dependents are eligible to apply for a residence permit.

You can renew your Mauritius permit after three years or when your permit expires, subject to the criteria defined in the schedule, sections 2 and 12 of the Investment Promotion Act being met.

Note: You must submit your application for renewal to the Board Of Investment.

You can apply to extend your short-term OP only once. Renewals are available for a period not exceeding three months. You must submit your application at least one month before the existing Mauritius visa expires.

Note: You must apply through the OP online application system. The documents defined in the checklist should be submitted with the application form.

If you hold an Occupation or Residence Permit in Mauritius, you can apply for a 10-year Residence Permit provided you meet the following conditions:

  • Investor: Aggregate turnover should exceed MUR 12 million for the three years.
  • Professional: The basic monthly salary must be over MUR 60,000 for three straight years.
  • Self-Employed: The business income must exceed MUR 800,000 per year for three consecutive years.
  • Retired Non–Citizen: A transfer of USD 18,000 annually to their local bank for 10 consecutive years.
