The re-opening of the application process for current Zimbabwean Special Permit holders has been approved by the cabinet, under certain conditions, according to Communications Minister, Ayanda Dlodlo, on Thursday 3rd August 2017.

They have decided that migrant Zimbabwean nationals living in South Africa should be given another opportunity to apply for permits to extend their stay.

Zimbabwean Special Permit

The Zimbabwean Special Permit (ZSP) allows applications for Zimbabweans with a valid Zimbabwean passport, evidence of employment, business or accredited study and a clear criminal record.

Successful applicants will be allowed to stay in South Africa to work, study or run a business.

The initial Special Dispensation for Zimbabweans was approved in April 2009 to document Zimbabweans who were in South Africa illegally. These permits will expire on 31 December 2017.

The special permits were introduced to allow Zimbabweans a three-year residency in South Africa.

Prof Hlengiwe Mkhize, the Minister of Home Affairs, will hold a separate briefing to explain the conditions and the process to be followed, once the re-applications opens.
